Inspired by the artificial head of André Charlin, a pioneer in this field, with two mics set on either side of a kind of windscreen simulating a head, two sound mixers, Albert Laracine and Jacques Chardonnier, who worked in the ORTF electroacoustic laboratory in 1965, devised the famous 17 cm - 110 ° pair, later called ORTF pair. 17 cm corresponding to the average distance between both ears, and 110 ° to the angle between the axes of their ear canals.

Two cardioid Schoeps mics were positioned according to these parameters. Later, Schoeps company studied a special device consisting of a main T-shaped tube, on which are screwed two cardioid MK4 capsules. The sound mixer is sure to make a good recording if both ears, set in the same place than the couple, perfectly hear the sound message.

Difficult to use outdoors, unless mics are equipped with B20 windscreens and W20 windjammer, there was no real windscreen adapted to these mics.

To make up for this lack, Cinela launched into the study of a specific windscreen: the "Albert" windscreen is thus the result of extensive preparatory work in collaboration with many users of this pair.

The clever side of the windscreen is to have a main sliding rail allowing an easy interval change from 0 to 20 cm, and the addition of an optional center mic very useful for film sound recording. The opening angle of the pair can be adjusted easily through the implementation of the new MINIX shockmount with its unique insulator.
The difficulty with this type of sound recording is to get mic directivity lobes uniform in frequency over at least 30 °, on either side of the axis of the transducers. In order not to cause a feeling of hole in the center, it would be necessary that this homogeneity of the frequency lobes be perfect, on at least 60 ° on either side of the axis of the used mics.

In any other case, one must find what is the best opening angle of the pair, in relation to used transducers, to avoid level drop and off sounds from sound sources set in the continuation of the pair centerline.

With the ALBERT windscreen thess specifications can be implemented very easily. Several versions are currently available:

- 5 pin XLR stereo version;
- XLR 7-pin 3-track version, the central mic can be quickly dismantled through the use of a Binder connector;
- Version Schoeps CCM version;
- Sennheiser MKH 8000 version;
- and shortly ORTF MSTC Schoeps single-unit version.
