In a nutshell
Boom Audio Kit Cool is not an accessory intended only for fifty-year-old boom operator. It is made up of a harness, a telescopic arm and a foam roller articulated support; it is used in place of the carrier arm of the boom operator, while the other arm adjusts boom mic. On feature shoots, it will be particularly useful on long shots with fully extended boom and few moves, especially outdoors when the weight of the windscreen (and sometimes of the radio transmitter) becomes a handicap.
But Kit Cool really find its place on documentary shoots because it allows very long sound recording, while enabling level modulation on a mixer or a recorder with free arm.
Our recommendations
Kit Cool requires the same learning as steadicam, particularly on feature shoots: since arms hardly move, legs and pelvis must be able to move like boxer's legs.
When moving, and especially walking, with the Kit Cool, boom noise, normally deadened thanks to arm flexibility, are more audible. So, we particularly advise to use a dedicated Osix shock mount.
