In a nutshell
Sony PCM7040 is a reference for DAT studio recorders. It is bulky, but sturdily-built. It is mainly used for downloading takes into the AVID (digitalization). The PCM7040 is the easier-to-use remote-controled recorder (RS 422), world-famous with picture and sound editors. Its sampling frequencies are 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, but not 32 kHz: for this sampling rate, common in radio broadcasting, it is better to use the PCM7010. Let's underline that, thanks to their powerful error compensating circuit, the devices of this range are the best for playing back tapes recorded on defective machines.
