DPA 8010 hydrophone is supplied with its sea-water resistant vulcanized cable which allows it to go 10 meters deep. This very sturdy omnidirectional piezoelectric pickup has flat response curve up to 20 KHz, which however does not reach down below 100 Hz, because of wavelengths which are four to five times longer in water than in air. 48V Phantom powered, it can be connected to a traditional microphone input without any impedance adapter.
It is important to connect recorder or mixer ground to sea water, for example with a copper braid, in order to avoid floating potentials which could cause hum and other interferences.
It is also advised to avoid air bubbles stuck to protective rubber at immersion time, because they would make up an acoustic insulator and thus lessen hydrophone sensitivity. Use of liquid detergent is a good way to avoid formation of these air bubbles.
Lastly, we suggest to fix cable end to a float, then to connect it to preamp, taking care to allow a loose loop in order to compensate for swell movement on boat. This is also a safety measure in case connector would fall down.
