In a nutshell

Beyer MCE 5 was the first electret lavalier microphone which attempted miniaturization: a big step forward compared to Sony ECM 50, contemporary of Beyer MCE 5. Its unfailing sturdiness has made it very popular with ENG soundmen, especially for interview when its low response compensates for proximity effect. On production shoots, it has been replaced by new generation smaller-sized lavalier microphones.
