In a nutshell

Sennheiser MKH 40 cardioidbelongs to Sennheiser MKH xx series which, thanks to a unique condenser polarization process, provides very high output level (switchable -10 dB attenuator) and background noise reduction, especially useful on very low signals or with poor preamps. These microphones are not very climate sensitive (immune to cold, heat, humidity) and have proved their worth in extreme conditions, from Sahara to Himalaya. Transient response is particularly good, but can be awkward on boom: we strongly advise use of built-in low-cut filter when it is mounted on boom or stand.

Our recommendations

Like all pressure gradient microphones, MKH 40 is very wind and fast movement sensitive. A foam windscreen should be used indoors when microphone is on a boom, and Rycote type windscreen is required outdoors.
