In a nutshell

The Tascam DR-60D is a quad preamp mixer, coupled with a four-track recorder on SD/SDHC card.
It features:
- Two inputs on Neutrik Combo connector (XLR3F microphone, 6.35 mm jack for line), balanced and individually provided with switchable 48V Phantom power;
- One unbalanced inputs on 3.5 mm stereo mini jack for RM receivers or electret microphones;
- Two 3.5mm stereo output mini jack for the DSLR;
- One stereo output for headphones on 3.5mm mini jack, and a return input (DSLR output) to monitor the recorded signal.

Tascam know-how in digital processing is well established (see IXJ-2), and the DR-60D offers all possibilities of a true digital mixer: limiters on each channel, different low-cut filter frequencies to choose from, viewing on a large LCD, pre-rec buffer, and so on. Not to mention many bit depth and sampling frequencies options for the recorder.

The counterpart of this is a menu-based interface and multifunction buttons, which make it a bit difficult to use for a simple untrained cameraman not backed up by a sound guy at ease with this kind of equipment. Its size is not negligible, and it lacks autonomy with four alkaline LR6 batteries, especially with energy greedy condenser microphones (Schoeps CMC6) and compulsory backlight for LCD.

Nontheless, DR-60D offers a very good price/quality ratio, even if it's more dedicated to sound engineers than to solo operating cameramen.
