In a nutshell

In the Sound Devices family, I ask for... the MixPre-10T! The US manufacturer is definitely not stopping multiplying its models of field mixer-recorders.

The MixPre-10T features 8 balanced mic/line inputs on XLR/TRS connectors. The brand usual Kashmir preamps have an -128 dBu input ultra-low-noise and new 32-bit A/D with 115 dBA dynamic range at 32-bit depth. Each input is given a 3-order (18 dB/oct) adjustable low-cut filter on its analog stage from 40 to 160 Hz. An auxiliary/microphone input on mini-jack allows for example a camera return.

Although quite small but with backlit, gain encoders can operate in two distinct modes, either as a single input trim or as a double-gain trim/mix fader.

Two balanced outputs on TA3M connectors for the stereo mix bus and one unbalanced stereo output on mini-jack for the auxiliary buses are present. There are no direct outputs from the inputs.

12 digital input and 4 output channels on either USB-A or USB-C connector (needs ASIO driver) from 44.1 to 96 kHz at 16 or 24-bit depth make the MixPre-10T a valuable multi-IO audio interface.

Especially designed for ENG, the MixPre-10T offers a complete and versatile timecode/wordclock circuit with a TC input and output on BNC connectors as well as a TC input on camera HDMI connector.

As for the VR mode, the MixPre-10T also features an Ambisonic plug-in to record and listen to the 4 channels of an A-format microphone (Soundfield SPS200, Sennheiser Ambeo), encode them in B-format or record, listen and decode B-format microphones (Soundfield ST350).

The MixPre-10T could be internally powered with 8 AA cells or batteries or externally on a standard 4-pin Hirose connector (10-18 V).

Finally, the MixPre-10T is also a 10-track ISO recorder plus 2 mix tracks on a single SH-HC card (SD-XC up to 512 GB) and auto-copy on external USB media (thumbdrive) in BWF with timecode and metadata, from 44.1 to 192 kHz, 16 or 24-bit depth.

The MixPre-10T is controlled and monitored on a small (1.6" diagonal) LCD touch screen with a user friendly and intuitive setup and particularly easy to read even in direct sunlight. Best of all, it can also be controlled via Bluetooth (integrated, no need WM-Connect Module) with the free Sound Devices' Wingman application available on both iOS and Android. Some functions of the MixPre-10T (gain, recording) can also be driven with a MIDI control surface such as the AKAI MIDIMIX or the KORG nanoKONTROL3 or nanoKONTROL STUDIO.

Our recommendations

With less than one kilo without battery, the MixPre-10T is the ideal companion for news or documentary. Despite no automix function but with its many inputs with high dynamics, the sound mixer only needs to know how to place lavaliers and hold a boom to produce an acceptable and efficient sound for post. Furthermore the MIxPre-10T USB functions and MIDI control capabilities also make it an interesting equipment for a musician's home studio.
