You need a headset: to tune in with, to get distant stations, to listen-in without disturbing others, to shut out the noise in the room...

During the meetings of Authors-Directors-Producers Association in Dijon, on October 2015, Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+, stressed the importance of the movie theater which is the only way to transform a film into an event, but also to live a collective experience. In this context, he mentioned the development of individual headsets that will revolutionize cinema consumption for young audiences.

90 years after this American advertising, 3D Sound Labs, a young French start-up, has developed a world exclusive, intelligent 3D headset, under the name of NEOH, which attracted the Kickstarter funding platform, before raising 1.1 million euros from different funds, in order to commercialize their invention as the 3D Sound One.

3D audio is real sound reproduction, where each sound source is locatable, either for direction or for distance. This is the sound as if there was no headset, says Dimitri Singer, sound director for 3D Sound Labs.

3D Sound One incorporates sensors to compensate for head movements and increase the realism of sound immersion. A driver for Windows (minimum 8.1) is required to use the headset with video and games using 3D audio. There is also an app for iOS (iPhone and iPad) called One Player compatible with MPEG-H 3D Audio and Dolby Atmos, which starts to equip auditoriums and movie theaters. This application will soon be available for Android and Windows systems.

With Dolby Atmos, the viewer enjoys better sound immersion, with a much more realistic three-dimensional soundscape rendering (3D audio) and a precise location of static or moving objects.

This new technology can also be applied in the health field. Xavier Bonjour, cofounder of 3D Sound Labs, says: We will integrate the features of our headphones for the hearing impaired, so that they can identify the origin of the sounds they perceive, which currently is not the case.

It is a huge market that is likely to open in the coming years because, according to an Ipsos survey published on October 30, headphones seem to have taken precedence over the lullabies of our grandmothers and all those infants may become deaf before age 50!

It is important not to forget that the ear is a very fragile organ whose cells are not renewed.

For our elderly customers, sound mixers, retired but still active, Brandes headsets of Grandpa are still for rent at DC Audiovisuel.
