Zaxcom Deva II, even if it has many defects, one must give back to Cesar what belongs to Cesar: is the first multitrack field recorder on hard disk. It is reproached for, among other things, clearly perfectible ergonomics, lack of aesthetic qualities, and for not providing an on-board mixer: Over the shoulder use is not easy if one does not add really good mike preamps. Besides, the Deva can manage only two media: hard disk (4 GO partitions for the internal disk) and dvd-ram (partitions of 2 GO for all external medium), which necessitates the burning of two dvd-ram, a slow and expensive medium but very popular in the United States, to transfer a 4 GO partition. The manufacturer is also reproached for his poor reactivity to the remarks and critics of European users. Having said that, once the bugs inherent to such a new product have been corrected (safeguard battery fixing, for example), the Deva II has proven to be a strong and most reliable machine.
