In a nutshell

The Lectosonics PDR is an RF transmitter without RF!

It is, in fact, a miniautre monophonic recorder on micro SD card, the size of an RF transmitter of the SMQV range of the same brand, equipped with a microphone/line input in TA5M on which can be plugged either an electret or a dynamic microphone, a tie capsule, or a line.

A 5-point Lemo connector allows the recorder to be synchronized in fugitive mode (jam) with an external TC. The FAT32 recoding format on micro SDHC card, FAT32 formated, is standard BWF 48 kHz 24-bit monophonic.

Innovation, the PDR allows to record the same signal simultaneously in two separate files, one at the nominal level and the other at a reduced level of -18 dB. This can be used to make up for possible saturations of the first file.

The set of controls, start-up, adjustments, recording, reading, is implmented by push-button with visualization on an LCD screen. A mini jack output allows monitor control during recording and playback. One can regret the lack of remote control, such as the sound remote control of the Lectosonics brand, allowing start and stop recording.

This miniature recorder, which is to be used as a radio mic, makes full sense when the distance with the actor is too far to guarantee optimum reception. But it can also be used in the case of uncontrolled individual sound recording on autonomous people, as in those famous reality TV shows where candidates are left to themselves in hostile environments or, on the contrary, idyllic.

The PDR is powered by a single AAA battery (LR03). Its battery life of 2 to 3 hours, with an alkaline battery, can last up to 6 hours with a lithium battery.

Note that Zaxcom had already solved this problem by integrating an SD card recorder inside its transmitters. Lectrosonics was content to do only half the work.
