Akai DD 1500 was introduced in 1994 by Akai after the DD 1000 wide success with film editors (which was the first digital audio recorder on magneto-optical disc). Akai DD 1500 is the first Digital Audio Workstation managing 16 tracks with a 48 kHz sampling rate, at 16 linear bits. The DD 1500 has highly contributed to spread virtual editing. This user-friendly machine has its specific ergonomics: there is a key for each function, but no mouse... In this respect, the DD 1500 differs from its competitors who are based on a traditional personal computer concept: no plug-in, no software extension, no possible evolution, it is in fact a locked system. However sound studios made it a real success, thanks to its very simple interconnection with other devices, via the RS 422 port ("Plug and Play"). This virtual workstation was very popular with French rerecording mixers, for its aptitude to play signals backwards (mixers' favourite method for dialogue level equalization) and for the easy resynchronization with picture (Foley session). Today, because of its limits due to the locked system and to the low number of tracks, it is more and more superseded in sound studios by Merging Technologies Pyramix.
