Beyer M 88 is an hypercardioid dynamic microphone with large diaphragm; thanks to its unfailing sturdiness, it is an integral part of most TV soundman gear. It has a good sensitivity and its well balanced medium response meets analogical TV frequency response specs. Its powerful polar parts, passive electronics and sturdiness make it a heavy mike, which requires a strong shock mount like the one manufactured by DC Audiovisuel, or Shure A55M.
M 88, like all pressure gradient mikes, is very wind, fast-movement and proximity effect sensitive. Because of its higher sensitivity than ribbon mike, it stands better the addition of a foam windscreen. Let's signal that M88 is not a handheld mike: though its diaphragm is suspended, direct handling generates significant noises
