In a few words

Sony PCM-R204 4 track DAT recorder was first intended for on-board vibration measurement (aeronautics, cars, trains). It allows four independent track recording by doubling tape speed. This provides a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range, with a 16 bit linear quantification at 48 kHz sampling frequency. Inputs (analogical, designed for physical values sensors) and outputs (analogical, designed for PC acquisition cards) are unbalanced, at line level and BNC wired. Confidence monitoring is only possible track by track, so, on recording session, a mixer should be added upstream. Like its cousin, Sony TCD-D10 PRO II, the PC 204 is neither remote controlable, nor synchronisable and does not manage time code; nevertheless its very steady tape speed allows synch recording. But the same recorder must be used for playback (tape format is not compatible with Stelladat). Finally, because of its primary intended use, the PC 204 has real assets: its full metal case and its mechanics, which withstand acceleration up to several G, make it really shockproof; moreover, it accepts a great number of different power sources.
