In a nutshell

Sennheiser MKH 20 omnidirectional belongs to Sennheiser MKH xx series which, thanks to a unique condenser polarization process, provides very high output level (switchable -10 dB attenuator) and background noise reduction, especially useful on very low signals or with poor preamps. These microphones are not very climate sensitive (immune to cold, heat, humidity) and have proved their worth in extreme conditions, from Sahara to Himalaya. Transient response is particularly good, but can be awkward on boom: we strongly advise use of built-in low-cut filter when it is mounted on boom or stand.

Our recommendations

The MKH 20 (pressure transducer) is less wind and fast movement sensitive than pressure gradient equivalents. Nevertheless, a foam windscreen is required indoors when it is boom mounted and a Rycote type windscreen outdoors. Capsule can be used in free field: flat response (outdoors or indoors near the source), or in diffuse field: high frequency switchable bump, +6 dB to 12 KHz (indoors, at a higher distance from source than room critical radius).
