In a nutshell

Sennheiser MKH 60 hypercardioid belongs to Sennheiser MKH xx series which, thanks to a unique condenser polarization process, provides very high output level (switchable -10 dB attenuator) and background noise reduction, especially useful on very low signals or with poor preamps. These microphones are not very climate sensitive (immune to cold, heat, humidity) and have proved their worth in extreme conditions, from Sahara to Himalaya. Transient response is particularly good, but can be awkward on boom: we strongly advise use of built-in low-cut filter when it is mounted on boom or stand.

Our recommendations

Though membrane is protected at the bottom of interference tube, MKH 60, like all pressure gradient microphones, is very wind and fast movement sensitive. Foam windscreen should be used indoors when microphone is on a boom, and Rycote type windscreen is required outdoors. High side rejection in medium and high frequencies and high output level provide remarkable definition on wide shots. A switchable high-frequency accentuation (+4 dB with 10 KHz) offers compensation for brightness loss on very wide shots (refer to diffuse field and omnidirectional capsule), or for accumulation of wind protections.
