In a few words

Sennheiser MKH 30 figure-8 pattern belongs to Sennheiser MKH xx series which, thanks to a unique condenser polarization process, provides very high output level (switchable -10 dB attenuator) and background noise reduction, especially useful on very low signals or with poor preamps. These mikes are not very climate sensitive (immune to cold, heat, humidity) and have proved their worth in extreme conditions, from Sahara to Himalaya. Transient response is particularly good, but can be awkward on boom: we strongly advise use of built-in low-cut filter when it is mounted on boom or stand.

Our recommendations:

Like all pressure gradient mikes, MKH 30 is wind and fast movement very sensitive. Foam windscreen should be used indoors when mike is on a boom, and a Rycote type windscreen is required outdoors. Combined with MKH 40 (cardioid), or even with MKH 50 (hypercardioid), it makes up a certainly bulky but sturdy and climate insensitive MS pair.
