In a few words

Sennheiser MKH 418S is the last issue of Sennheiser MKH series being strongly inspired by its Neumann predecessor (RSM 191): the two semi-coincidentes capsules placed in a single body make it possible to boom dialogues as one would do it with a half-shotgun mike, while preserving the possibility of recreating a stereophonic effect for shots which are worth the sorrow of it.
Its great advantage compared to its predecessor is due to the technology of membranes polarization (by high frequency) which confers to him a great immunity in the atmospheric conditions and moisture in particular. Its principal disadvantage is due to the fact that it is delivered without interface box: it is not possible to filter low frequencies or to attenuate sensitivity, nor to balance M/S ratio, even less to feed it with a 9 volts battery... However, its very reduced price and its short dimensions make of it a good tool for documentaries, likely to be worth you the praises of editing room!
