In a few words

Beyer M 160 is a double ribbon pressure gradient hypercardioid mike which has won acclaim on production shoots during the 70ies. It offers a very hot and round sound for voices and some musical instruments, and its response curve goes very well with "theatre voices". On the other hand, its very low output level makes its basic noise rather significant and thus requires very good preamps downstream, like Nagra 4.2 +6db dynamic preamps or M3Í PAD 30 preamp.

Our recommendations:

Like all pressure gradient mikes, M 160 is wind and fast movement very sensitive. Silk pongee should be used indoors, when mike is on a boom. Ribbon is a fragile mechanical element: avoid explosions and shots. It is humidity sensitive and prone to ageing: each mike has its own response, which is a consequence of what it has been through.
